Special Project Part 3: Kanze Noh Theatre + Tama Art University Noh Theater Poster Workshop 2013
The annual Noh poster workshop, led by students from Tama Art University, is now in its third year. This year, participants enjoyed performances of the Noh play "Hōkasō," the Kyogen play "Harafuritachi," and the Noh play "Raiden" from August's "Kanze-kai Ariso Noh," which showcases young Noh performers.
This performance, held annually on a lively summer night, offers a glimpse into the vibrant atmosphere of the audience and the various performances the students experienced. Each individual piece, unique to each participant, seems to offer a direct look at the diverse and profound depths of Noh theater.
Now, let me introduce you to the works of 18 students with fresh and vibrant sensibilities. Please enjoy them at your leisure.

Katsuhiro Kinoshita (Professor, Tama Art University)
On August 8, 2013, 54 third-year students in the Graphic Design Department at Tama Art University, enrolled in the Communication Course, attended a performance of "Kanze-kai Ariso Noh" at the Kanze Noh Theater in Shibuya. Based on their experiences there, they created posters to encourage young people of their generation to take an interest in Noh theater.
This extracurricular activity provides an excellent opportunity to experience and contemplate the spirit, culture, and beauty of Noh, a Japanese masked musical drama with a 700-year tradition. It also offers a chance to showcase the expressive power unique to graphic design by symbolically visualizing the narrative expressed within the time axis of "dance" and "sound" and fixing it onto a single sheet of paper [poster].
From posters that evoke the Noh art form to those based on specific performances, or those that feature the Kanze Noh Theatre as the source of information, we present a selection of works created with a modern sensibility by each individual participant.
